Do Your Bidding

Actress Joan Crawford

Look, I have no intention of bidding on a single thing, honest, but I can’t help but be intrigued by the idea that the estate of Joan Crawford is auctioning off an assortment of her personal items this Wednesday at 10 am.  I mean, why now?  She died in 1977.

The Academy Award winning actress who made over 80 films is best known to a certain generation as the woman who lost it over wire hangers, as was written about by her (adopted and later disowned) daughter Christina Crawford in Mommie Dearest.   To another generation she’s better remembered for her roles in movies like Mildred Pearce, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? in which she co-starred with Bette Davis.  Among the items up for sale are paintings, minks, jewelry and film memorabilia (including her Cecil B. Demille Award).  You can browse online if you’re just curious to see the items and even bid online, or, you can view the historic auction items up close during exhibition hours (listed below).

I’m disappointed to hear that many of these personal items aren’t getting donated to a museum somewhere — there must be more than a few that would love to have them.   But no doubt, it will all bring in a pretty penny.  Perhaps some answers to all of this can be best understood in her own words, as Ms. Crawford once said, “I believe in the dollar. Everything I earn, I spend.”
